What is Ultrasonography and Why is It Performed?
Ultrasonography (USG) is a safe and harmless imaging method that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize internal organs. It does not involve radiation, is painless, and typically requires no special preparation. In women’s health, it is frequently used to evaluate gynecological conditions and to monitor fetal development during pregnancy.
Gynecological ultrasonography allows examination of the female reproductive system. It is used for diagnosis and treatment planning in various areas as listed below. It can generally be performed either transvaginally or abdominally (through the abdomen). The preferred method depends on the patient's symptoms and clinical condition.
Ovaries and cysts:
Simple or complex cysts in the ovaries are evaluated via ultrasound to identify potential risks.
Endometrial thickness (uterine lining):
The thickness of the endometrium is evaluated to investigate issues like menstrual irregularities, infertility, or postmenopausal bleeding.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) findings:
The presence of multiple small cysts in the ovaries and signs of hormonal imbalance support the diagnosis of PCOS.
Investigating causes of menstrual irregularities:
Ultrasound is used to investigate underlying structural or hormonal causes in patients experiencing menstrual irregularities.
Intrauterine device (IUD) control:
Used to check the proper placement of an IUD and to assess for possible complications.
Evaluation before IVF/infertility treatment:
A detailed examination of reproductive organs, follicle development, and uterine structures is performed before initiating treatment.
Obstetric Ultrasonography
Ultrasounds performed during pregnancy allow the evaluation of the baby's development, early diagnosis of congenital abnormalities and monitoring of the mother's health. Obstetric ultrasonography performed in our clinic in Alanya covers the following topics based on trimester:
First Trimester (Weeks 1–13)
Confirmation of pregnancy, detection of gestational sac, fetal heartbeat, determination of gestational age, nuchal translucency measurement before the first-trimester screening test, NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Test).
Second Trimester (Weeks 14–26)
Detailed fetal anatomy scan (assessment of anomalies), evaluation of the placenta and amniotic fluid, gender determination, monitoring fetal growth.
Third Trimester (Week 27 and Beyond)
Assessment of fetal position (cephalic, breech, etc.), fetal well-being (biophysical profile), preparation for delivery: cervix evaluation, amniotic fluid level, estimation of fetal weight.
