What is Vaginal Infection?
The vagina is an environment that naturally contains beneficial bacteria. However, when this balance is disrupted, harmful microorganisms can multiply and cause infections. The most common vaginal infections are:
Bacterial vaginosis:
It occurs as a result of the increase in harmful bacteria due to the decrease in beneficial bacteria in the vaginal flora; It shows symptoms with gray-white and foul-smelling discharge.
Mixed infections (multiple factors):
Infections caused by more than one microorganism, such as both fungi and bacteria or parasites at the same time, and require more careful diagnosis and treatment.
Trichomonas vaginitis (parasitic infection):
A sexually transmitted, contagious infection that progresses with foamy yellow-green discharge and intense itching, and also requires partner treatment.
Atrophic vaginitis (postmenopausal dryness and infection):
A condition that occurs when vaginal tissue thins, becomes dry, and becomes susceptible to infection as a result of decreased estrogen levels following menopause.
What are the symptoms of infection?
Although it can be seen in different severity in each woman, the most common symptoms are that when these symptoms are noticed, getting examined immediately will prevent the infection from becoming chronic and spreading.
- Itching, burning sensation.
- Colored or foamy vaginal discharge.
- Bad smell. (especially fishy smell)
- Pain during sexual intercourse.
- Frequent urination, burning while urinating.
- Dryness, irritation or edema in the vagina
How is Diagnosis Made?
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Meral Tuğba Çimşir attaches importance not only to symptoms but also to detailed evaluations during the diagnosis process:
- The vagina and its surroundings are visually evaluated with a gynecological examination
- A sample is taken from the discharge and microscopic and cultural examination is performed
- If necessary, the type of infection is clarified with pH measurement and laboratory tests
- In recurrent infections, immune, hormonal or systemic disorders are also evaluated
Treatment Methods
Treatment is planned according to the type and severity of the infection:
Antifungal vaginal suppositories or oral medications are used in fungal infections.
Antibiotic-containing local or systemic treatment is applied in bacterial vaginosis.
In parasitic agents such as Trichomonas, both the woman and the partner are treated.
Hormonal support and vaginal moisturizers are recommended in postmenopausal atrophic vaginitis.
In recurrent infections, probiotic treatments that support the flora are added.
