What is Colposcopy?
Colposcopy is a diagnostic procedure performed using a special device with an optical magnifying system that allows detailed examination of the tissues of the cervix, vagina and vulva by magnifying them. The aim is to detect abnormal cellular changes that cannot be seen with the naked eye.
There are hundreds of types; some are harmless, some are high risk.
Most infections are cleared by the immune system.
High-risk HPV types can turn into cancer when long-term infection occurs.
It is possible to protect against the most common cancer-causing types with the HPV vaccine.
When is Colposcopy Performed?
- Abnormal Pap smear results (ASCUS, LSIL, HSIL, etc.)
- Detection of high-risk HPV
- Visible lesions or suspicious areas on the cervix
- Persistent vaginal discharge or bleeding complaints
- Detailed evaluation after a diagnosis of cervical dysplasia
- Follow-up of previously treated cervical lesions
How is the Colposcopy Procedure Performed?
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Meral Tuğba Çimşir performs the colposcopy procedure with the following steps:
- The cervix is visualized with the help of a speculum
- The tissues are examined in detail using a special magnifying device (colposcope)
- Acetic acid (vinegar solution) or Lugol's iodine solution is applied to highlight abnormal areas
- If necessary, a biopsy (small tissue sample) is taken from suspicious areas
- The procedure is generally painless and takes about 10-15 minutes

“Does bleeding occur after colposcopy?”
Yes, if a biopsy is taken, there may be some slight bleeding or spotting.
“Does colposcopy detect cancer?”
Colposcopy does not directly diagnose cancer, but it does detect cellular changes that may develop into cancer.
“Is there any special preparation required before the procedure?”
It is sufficient to avoid being during menstrual period and avoiding vaginal creams and douches.
